American Board of Radiology in Radiation Oncology

Dr. John Gargus is board certified as a Radiation Oncologist by the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Gargus has been practicing radiation oncology for 25 years in the greater Atlanta area including the last decade in Covington. While he performs general radiation oncology, he has special interest in the treatment of lung cancers and malignancies of the head and neck. He especially enjoys caring for patients living with advanced cancers, relieving symptoms in patients where cancer has spread to bone or other sites. Dr. Gargus believes in providing up to date cancer treatments and working in close communication with other physicians. “We were told in medical school that 90% of taking care of patients is listening. Despite all the advances in technology, I still find that to be true; listening to the patient and their families is at the heart of the way I practice medicine.”

Dr. Gargus attended the Medical College of Virginia (MCV), receiving his medical degree in 1978. He spent the next several years working in a family practice in rural Virginia. “These family docs did everything from delivering babies, setting fractures, to minor surgery. The things I learned from them have helped me throughout my entire medical career.”

Dr. Gargus is married with three grown children. He and his wife recently downsized to a loft apartment in the old cotton mill overlooking the shoals of the Yellow River. An excellent place for enjoying the beauty of nature and learning the history of Porterdale.
